Triggered Random

A sample-and-hold random voltage source. Send it a trigger and it picks a fresh random value, holding it steady on the output until the next trigger arrives. Reach for it when you want stepped, unpredictable movement — random pitches into a quantizer, wandering filter cutoffs, surprise modulation that changes only on cue.

How it works

On every rising edge of the trigger, it rolls a new value spread evenly across the range you set with Min and Max, then freezes that value on the output. Between triggers the output never drifts — it stays put. Before the very first trigger the output rests at 0 V.

Controls

  • Min — the low end of the random range, from -10 V to +10 V. Defaults

to -5 V.

  • Max — the high end of the random range, from -10 V to +10 V. Defaults

to +5 V. If Min ends up above Max (after CV), the two are swapped so the range still works.

Inputs & outputs

  • Trig — the trigger/gate that fires a new random value on its rising edge.
  • Min / Max CV — control voltages that sum 1:1 with the matching knob; a

±10 V signal sweeps the full range. The result is clamped to the ±10 V rails.

  • Out — the held random voltage.

Tips

  • Clock the trigger from a steady pulse for rhythmic random modulation; clock

it from your own gates for movement that lands exactly where you want it.

  • Patch Out through a quantizer for random-but-musical melodies. Narrow the

Min/Max range to keep the jumps small, or open it wide for big leaps.
