Sync Dual Delay

A tempo-locked stereo delay built from two independent echo lines, each set to its own musical division. Give the left and right lines different times and they fan out into a cross-rhythm — a quarter-note tail on one side, a dotted-eighth on the other — for delays that feel wide and rhythmically alive instead of a flat slap-back.

How it works

Both inputs are summed to a single mono source and fed into two delay lines running at separate clock-locked times. The left line drives the left output, the right line drives the right — so the stereo width comes entirely from the gap between the two divisions, not from panning. Tempo is read from the Clk input, where one pulse equals a quarter note; each line then echoes at its division of that beat. Each lane feeds back into itself, and Feedback sets how long that tail regenerates.

Controls

  • DivL / DivR — set each line's delay time as a musical division of the clock, stepped through twelve values from 1/1 down to 1/64, including dotted divisions (1/4., 1/8., …). Pull the two apart to create the polyrhythmic spread; matched, both sides are identical.
  • Mix — how much echo is layered on top of the dry signal. The dry always passes at full, so all the way down is clean and the default (fully up) adds the repeats at full strength — a send-style blend, not a dry/wet crossfade.
  • Feedback — how much of each lane's echo is fed back into itself, from 0 to 95%. Low gives a single slap-back per side; the 55% default is a handful of decaying repeats; cranked up, each line sustains into a long, regenerating polyrhythmic tail.
  • Clock — where the tempo comes from. Ext measures the pulses arriving at the clock input, which is how this module has always worked. Song follows the timeline's tempo directly, with no cable at all. Int runs at its own speed, set by the BPM field beside it. One thing worth knowing: in Ext the divisions are relative to whatever you clock it with, so feeding it sixteenths makes every label four times faster than it reads. In Int and Song the module knows what a quarter note is, so the labels mean exactly what they say.
  • BPM — the tempo for Int. In Song it greys out and shows you the timeline's tempo instead; in Ext it greys out too, because the cable is in charge.

Inputs & outputs

  • In L / In R — the stereo source; summed to mono before feeding both lines.
  • DivL / DivR / Mix / Feedback (CV) — voltage control over each knob: shift a line's division up or down for sweeps and tempo-stutter tricks, ride the wet blend, or animate the feedback tail. Patch an LFO or envelope to any of them.
  • Clk — the tempo clock; one pulse per quarter note, used while the Clock control is set to Ext. Unpatched, it sits at 120 BPM.
  • Out L / Out R — the left line's echoes appear on Out L, the right line's on Out R, each mixed with its own dry side.

Tips

  • Classic polyrhythm: 1/4 on DivL, 1/8. on DivR — two interlocking tails that pan themselves.
  • Set both divisions equal for a clean mono-summed delay when you don't want the spread.
  • The divisions are stepped, so an LFO into a Div CV jumps a line between rhythmic values rather than gliding — good for glitchy, re-timed fills.
