Sample & Hold
Captures the voltage at its input the instant a trigger arrives and holds it steady until the next one. The classic source of stepped random melodies, lo-fi sample-rate textures, and slow generative drift.
How it works
Leave In unpatched and the module samples its own internal noise source, so a clock into Trig hands you a fresh random voltage on every pulse — the textbook random-voltage generator. Patch a signal into In and it samples that instead. S&H mode grabs a single snapshot on each rising edge; T&H (track & hold) instead follows the input live for as long as the gate stays high, then freezes the moment it falls.
Controls
- Noise — the range of the built-in random source used when In is unpatched; turn it down for a tighter spread of values.
- Glide — slews the output between held values instead of stepping instantly, from snappy jumps up to long portamento glides.
- Mode — switch between S&H (sample on trigger) and T&H (track while the gate is high).
Inputs & outputs
- In — the signal to sample; leave it unpatched to sample the internal noise instead.
- Trig — the clock or gate that captures a sample (S&H) or opens the tracking window (T&H).
- Out — the held voltage, smoothed by Glide.
Tips
- Unpatched In plus a clock into Trig is an instant random stepped melody — quantize Out to keep it in key.
- Sample a slow LFO with a fast clock for rhythmic, staircased modulation.
- Crank Glide to turn hard steps into smooth, wandering drift.
