Ring Modulator (Fx)
A ring modulator with its own built-in carrier oscillator. It multiplies your incoming audio by an internal tone, producing the metallic, bell-like, inharmonic clang that ring modulation is famous for — robot voices, detuned chimes, sci-fi textures, and gritty timbral wreckage. No second oscillator to patch: dial the carrier and go.
How it works
The module runs an internal carrier and multiplies your signal by it sample-for-sample. That multiplication spawns sum and difference sidebands instead of the original pitches, which is why the result rarely lands on a familiar note — low carriers throb like tremolo, high carriers ring with bright, clangorous overtones. The carrier morphs continuously from a smooth sine to a hard square, the square piling on extra harmonics for a harsher, more aggressive bite. One shared carrier modulates both stereo channels, so your stereo image survives untouched.
Controls
- Freq — carrier pitch,
20 Hz–5 kHz, exponential so the low end stays playable. - Shape — morphs the carrier from pure sine (
0%) to hard square (100%); turn it up for grittier, brighter modulation. - Mix — dry/wet blend. Fully wet by default; back it off to fold the source signal back underneath.
Inputs & outputs
- In L / In R — the audio to modulate; the same carrier hits both channels.
- Freq / Shape / Mix CV — voltage control over each knob; patch an LFO or envelope to sweep the carrier pitch, morph the sine-to-square shape, or fade the clang in and out.
- Out L / Out R — the modulated stereo result.
Tips
- Patch a slow LFO into Freq CV for that classic seasick, warbling sweep; feed an envelope instead and the clang blooms and decays with each note.
- Keep Mix below full to retain the source's pitch underneath the clang — useful when you still want the part to read musically.
